well- if you've got spark and its in time...then it sounds like a fuel issue.

1. how did you verify that you have spark?
2. have you checked the timing? to do that- rotate the engine until #1 is at TDC on the compression stroke. then check the timing marker.

it ran for about two seconds; and no, I don't know how.
if it ran for a couple of seconds and then died- i'm leaning towards a fuel issue.
have you got a can of starter fluid? hit it with a quick shot (a couple of seconds) and try it again.

I would also look in the carb while looking working the accelerator to see if your getting gas to the carb. Might want to get alt checked out.
How did it run before battery when dead. Wondering if your getting good spark, have you checked the points.
