Fire the truck up and disconnect the positive lead to the battery and see if it stalls. If it does, you have an alternator problem. If it doesn't, your battery may be the culprit. I doubt you shorted out your alternator, but you may have disconnected one of the alternator wires. The connections to my '64 are difficult to see and I have to actually remove the alternator to see the wires. Just an opinion of how I would trouble shoot it.
77, This is one of those brother in law stories . He did the same thing as you in a 78 big Blazer, He chased this problem for weeks. Wound up having to put in an new alternator and battery together at the same time. Of course the GM had the voltage regulator built into the alternator. This is seperate on the Ford, (pass side below the hood hinge) He would install a battery and it would go dead in a couple of days or so. Then he would leave the used battery in and change the alternator, same thing. It seemed like they were reversing the polarity in each other. Try the voltage regulator and good battery together and see what happens.( that is if nothing else visible is seen, like a broken wire or etc.)Good luck!
