Ok, I just put in my freshly re-built tranny in my 78 with a new low gearset installed, I got it put in just fine, started it up and even drove it down the road and back. I then parked it and when I was ready to go it didn't start.
I turned the key and there was nothing not even a solenoid click, just silence.
My electric fuel pump did turn on however. I tested the solenoid and its not the problem. The problem is between the solenoid and the ignition. I think it may be neutral safety switch on the tranny but I'm not sure.
Is there a fuse somewhere in that system or does it sound like it's definitely that swich.
The parts store wants $40 for the switch so I would like to be fairly sure that's it, before I buy.
I don't assume anything about anyone. Especially someone I don't know. Have you made sure that the truck was in the correct gear and checked all those other things?
We had a problem where the same thing happened, and before I replaced the solenid, I went through and made sure everything was connected. Turns out my truck wasn't perfectly in PARK, and so didn't want to start.
yep, I first tested every gear and position with the shifter to see if that was it, no go in neutral or in park. Then my next test was to bypass the solenoid and it would turn over. Then I tested the solenoid buy crossing the positive from the battery to the positive control hookup to the solenoid, it turned over, so the solenoid is ok. It has to be between the solenoid and the ignition somewhere. Help!
Problems like these can be aggravating!!! I had a '76 Elite that I used as a work car and had the same symptoms. I could start it under the hood but not with the ignition switch, if I follow you correctly. I replaced the starter with a $25 one and that fixed it. $40 for an ignition switch sounds kinda high to me. Just my .02. Good Luck.
Sorry if I was not clear the $40 is for a nutral safty switch on the outside of the tranny. That is what I think is wrong with it but I was looking here for some wisdom before buying.
First test the wires.
Unplug the connector from the ignition switch, use a test light to find the hot.....
if none are hot then you aren't getting power to the switch.....
Match the color of the wire going to the solonoid to one of the wires going into the plug....
If jumping it works then the ignition switch is bad.
On mine the swich was good as was the power coming into it. I had a short somewhere in the wire to the solonoid so I ran a new wire from the ignition switch to the solonoid and the problem was solved.
