I am replacing my exhaust manifolds with headers and will replace the the entire exhaust system. Question: Can I do away with this A.I.R. system? Or can I replace it ?
The AIR system doesn't go through the exhaust manifolds (at least in the later years); it goes into the back of the heads via the crossover pipe. If you wanted to remove the AIR system, you would remove the crossover pipe and either plug the ports in the back of the heads or (better) get or make a blockoff plate and use the crossover pipe bolts to attach them. I'm sure that somebody makes blockoff plates, so a quick search should turn up a set for you.
What year/engine is your setup? The AIR system doesn't really drag on the engine and cause performance issues; are you just looking to tidy up the engine bay or something?
The air pump DOES supply air to the catalytic converters thru a port on the Y-pipe, usually between the 2 cats. Many aftermarket exhaust systems are now compatible with your stock emissions systems, so try to keep everything working right. It'll make the truck more reliable and driveable, especially if your area ever DOES get emissions testing. I recommend staying with as many stock parts as possible (so they're cheaper & easier to find), but I can understand that the exhaust is an easy way to liberate power from the engine.

If I Replace The Exhaust Manifolds With Headers Would It Eliminate The Need For This A.i.r. System?

the thermactor air supply pump and all but technically it is illegal to remove or alter emissions hardware so you can have problems in selling the vehicle or getting by inspections or emissions testing. I don't think the catalytics need an air supply. I could be wrong here but I think the air is dumped to the port on the exhaust only when it is not taken in at the heads under certain conditions such as cold start/warm up period, full throttle
operation and other conditoins.
Just bought a 86 Bronco, 351W and looking to do the same thing. The air pump was disconnected and no tubes were attached. The plumbing in the back was taped off with a Pepsi can. So needless to say, I don't have the all the parts anyway. Anybody heard of plates or plugs to remove this Termactor junk?
