Exhaust

I understand a better exhaust will improve my truck's performance and MPG. Do I _really_ need to replace the entire exhaust system or can I just replace the stock muffler with a Flowmaster? Anybody know what size pipes are on a stock '99 F150 4.6L?
Regarding the intake: With the K&N air filter system, will it require me to replace the whole canister assembly or can I put the filter in the stock canister? I'm concerned about the stock air sensors and an exposed filter.
One more thing: Does anyone know who makes a hard topper that is easy and simple to remove when I want to haul something?

I had a custom dual exhaust system installed, but you can just install a flowmaster and be fine. As for the filter, you can get a drop-in K&N filter for about $50 and it fits into the stock canister. Or, you can get an Airaid system for about $200 that replaces the whole assembly and has the open cone K&N filter. For the bed cover, try Pace-Edwards. I've got one on order now, and it will be replacing my Extang Sabre soft Tonneau.

You can see pics of all this stuff on my page at http://www.myf150.com

If you just want something that is light and quick to remove, get a light weight aluminum topper. Not much weight, and two people can lift it off quick and easy if you use quick clamps and don't bolt it down (but aluminum toppers are SOOO ugly). Any cab height topper will work with a little help from a friend and some quick clamps. The big fiberglass ones will require a little more oomph however. If your talking about a "turtle cover", then look for the manufacturer that has the hinges that unhook when you stand the lid straight up. The frame stays clamped right to the truck bed, so there is nothing you need wrenches for. Happy truckin'.

The only reason you would have to replace more than your muffler(s) is if the rest of the exhaust system is shot. If it's is good shape then leave it alone.
