E4OD Transmission and Shift Kit

So we got a 89 Ford F350 with 460 V8 and E4OD tranny. Told it has a shift kit. Now my question is, it shifts with a slight jerk. No noise or annoyance from it but just wondering if that is normal with a shift kit. There is no clunking noise either so I know it is not a u-joint.

Well, the purpose of a shift kit is to give a more positive shift, so yes, I'd say it has a kit installed.

"Positive" as in firmer shift? Just clarifying. How does this help when towing?

Shift kits usually increase the line pressure in the transmission. This makes the clutches lock together quicker than stock. This reduces how long the clutches slip reducing wear on the clutches as well as transmitting the power to the wheels with less down time during shifts.

It sounds normal, and it's usually considered beneficial for towing for reduced wear-and-tear.

I have a shift kit in a 96 E4OD and it does exactly that, especially with a healthy amount of throttle, and shifts hard if not enough throttle. I love it so far and has probably just under 10,000 miles on the rebuilt tranny! Puts the power to the wheels very well!

Thanks for the explanation! This is a towing rig, definitely!

It just rolls along like nothing could ever stop it LOL... Love the feeling! It has the original tranny, I have a hunch that it might have been rebuilt at the same time it got the shift kit. It has 122K, and if it hasn't had a rebuild it still is in good shape. Gonna drop the trans pan tonight and see what's in there but it certainly isn't slipping!
