I dont' have experience with the internal shift kits. I used the external B&M Electronic Shift Improver kit on my 1997 F150 E40D. It was well worth the money. It connected to the truck electronics, allowed three different settings and did not void the factory warrantees. Also, it was easy to install.
There are two ways to go. Mechanical....modify the accumulator........or Electronically......via a computer chip or programmer. If you do the mechanical route you can either modify your accumulator or buy one that has been modified already, about $200, Factory Tech. The electronic route is simpler and less mess.....in fact, no mess, but it has drawbacks as well as benefits. Quick, easy to do and if the programmer is choosen, really easy and changeable too. Cost between $200 and $400. They both change the way the computer treats the electronics hooked to it. It tells the transmission to shift harder which basically puts more load on the components in the tranny. The court is still in session on which one is better. I have seen some that do both....but when you add them both, you are going to put such a load...may as well consider saving for a repair or, unloading the vehicle......
If you want a hard shift, mechaincal is my personal choice. The jury is out on the hard shift and I am either going to get to like it or, I am going to change the springs in the accumulator to soften it up a bit, but not too much but, then you are dropping the pan again so......if you do not already have the 4X4 pan, which is deeper and comes with a drain plug.....it is messy and I highly recommend this pan as an upgrade no matter what because it makes fluid changes wonderful and increases the fluid capacity.....always an added benefit. Several companies also make aftermarket cast aluminum pans....my personal choice is Mag-Hytec, nice stuff and looks awesome but you get what you pay for. Add a differential cover and enjoy having truck on the alignment rack....scenery for the alignment tech!! Nice thought anyway.....
