Howdy guys, I have a few questions about an 02 Ranger. My friend has an 02 Ranger with 4.0, 105,XXX 4wd Auto. He recently "blew" the motor (his words).
I have heard alot of bad things about these motors, is it something worth investing in? I am considering offering him pay off on which is $2,200. Any ideas on about how much a motor will cost and where to find one and is it worth it?
My first thought would be the timing chain guides. Ford supposedly fixed this issue with the '03 models. The 4.0L SOHC has 3 chains therefore, 3 sets of guides and I've read that the engine has to be removed to get to the rear guide...
Just a thought - without knowing the details of what happened when the engine "blew", it's hard to say...
Thats kinda what i am concerned about. If it is a "simple" pull and repair situation, that is definately a plus. However if it is true "blown" motor i maybe looking into a PowerStroke conversion!!!!
J/k

Now that's something I'd like to see!!
Depending on overall condition, I might buy it, and either just replace the whole engine with a short block, or, if you're really ambitious, a small block V8, gasser. The Stroker would be super cool, but those engines aren't cheap, and the suspension mods and electronics would outprice me very quickly.

Hmmmm I do have a '99 F250 PowerStroke and a '00 F250 PowerStroke in my driveway........
But i don't see me stripping the '99 down and my wife would kill me if i touched her '00 with ill intentions!!
I am hoping it is the timing chain, weather permitting i am going to go look at it tomorrow. The work will be done by me, brother in law and maybe father inlaw. So that will cut down on shop costs.
The V8 swap is something i could definately be persuaded to do!
Thanks for your help guys. I'll keep you updated on what i decide to do.
Just talked to my buddy with the Ranger, and he said that it ran out of water and quit. Due to pretty crappy weather i wasn't able to make the ride to VA. to look at it? I offered $2,500 after seeing the KBB value of $8,000 and he seems pretty interested. Any input?
Check some junkyards in your area to get an estimate on another engine. If the truck has been abused(running it dry would qualify in my book) or poorly maintained it makes you wonder what condition the tranny/4wd and other major components are in.
I know that the current owner hasn't had it off-road in any hardcore uses, but as far as anything else I'm not sure. I still need to get up there and check it out myself. I'll know more after looking at it first hand. I am just a little leery about it, I have never had any exposure to the 4.0L.
