I have a 1971 F100with only 16688 actual miles, the bad side all the rubber is dried out. Question is on the rear main is dried out to change the rear main seal, do you have to pull the crank? It has a 3 speed on the column, Never changed a 71 before, and I didn't know if the rear main was two piece? The seal on my wife's 65 Cornet was 2 piece and I didn't have to drop the crank....
The rear main on a 360 is a two piece seal, so you won't have to drop the crank. It does help to loosen the crank bolts a bit, though.
When I did the one on a 390, we had to jack up the engine enough to be able to pull the oil pan. (Front sump.) You won't be able to pull the pan without dropping the oil pump pick up screen, so you'll have some interesting wrenching for that job. When you reinstall the seal, offset the ends by about 1/2" or so, meaning have one side sticking out of the seal groove by 1/2" and the other side recessed into the groove. Reverse the offset on the oil pan side.
It's messy, but not too bad a job.
