Sorry... 360. I'm hoping it's a 2piece kind that I can get from the pan side of things when I do my oil pump next week. I'm just trying to get parts ordered now.
Yes, you can do it without removing the trans. It is a two piece seal. If it hasn't been replaced, it will be a rope type seal. Replace the rope type seal with a two piece Fel-Pro rubber seal. It's also not necessary to "drop" the crank down a little by loosening other main caps.

This is GREAT NEWS INSTI - - - just discovered my rear main is leaking also - been dreading that job - glad to hear the tranny doesn't have to be pulled. THANKS
Rear main seals on FEs get blamed for leaking when it's not. Valve covers & intake manifolds are notorious for leaking, while having air flow push the leaking oil down the back and the ol rear main gets blamed.
I just had this reinforced on my truck this year when it took 3 gasket attempts on the drivers side to get it stopped. They leak bad bad too.
If your truck has a C6 pull the inspection cover and look at the seal area, most times it will be dry.
Also make sure the PCV system is working correctly; these motors need to have something to relieve the pressure so they aren't pushing oil out everywhere.
I did the whole top end not to long ago and it's dry up hi. The front 3/4 of the oil pan is dry too. The 360 smokes a good bit when cold and choked but cleans up after a little bit. I'm loosing about a quart of oil for every 1/3 tank of gas. I am a fan of the skinny pedal so I am hard on it. I have a 4spd so I'll pull the lower bell cover and take a look befor I commit to changing the rear main.
The bottom end is pretty warn out. I'll be throwing bearings and a high volume oil pump in there next weekend. I would like to get some more life out of the old 360 befor I'm forced to throw a ton of $ at my 460. I want to build it right and not rush it with cheep parts.
Hence why it's the last thing on my list for this motor.
I have been contemplating cutting out the x-member ant building a new better one. I hate dumb designs. It's a mess to change the oil too so a new x-member sounds good to me.
