1983 ford bronco 351 winsor m 4X4
alright guys, i just bought a 83 ford bronco xlt with the 4x4.
What doesnt work
odometer,
speedometer,
the shifter (meaning the P R N D 2 1) but i can move it but will sit on the P.
4X4. it is the manual locks on the wheel and then move it with the shifter.
I love it sits on 38's with a nice lift.
My question is why would my 4X4 not work? i would love to get this fixed first and then worry about the other problems!!

Does the truck actually move?
Can you drive the truck up and down the street, field, parking lot?
I don't know what you mean by sit on P.
What makes you the the front wheels are not engaging?
Is there a front drive shaft?
Did you lock the hubs?
Did you engage the transfer case buy shifting into 4HI?
Tell us what you did so far.

you know how when you move from P to R well the orange stick does not move, byt yes it drives up and down the road.
yes I locked the hubs, when i put in 4L they do not move, i found this out when getting stuck in mud and my front tires did not move. Yea there is a front drive shaft.... and i tried 4H and still nothing

well it was a trade, the guy wanted 3000 for it tho..
he had a lot of aftermarket lights ran in it, the blinkers didnt work at the time either, kept blowing a fuse, so i pulled all of his hed lights and what not out and the blinker fuse lasts a little bt longer than it was but still blows. its a fixer upper but im really wanting to use it for mudding

The "PRNDL" indicator uses a wire and a tiny clip that slips onto the column collar under the cover for it. If the indicator will not move but the transmission works properly, the clip or the wire have most likely just come undone. Pull the cover for the "PRNDL" and observe as you select gears.
For BOTH of the following procedures make certain the transmission is in PARK (and the brake set if at all possible). Chock the rear wheels either way.
With the front hubs LOCKED and the transfer case in neutral or 2H, crawl under the truck and try to turn the front driveshaft by hand. If it will turn a full revolution, the problem is in the front differential gears or at least one of the hubs is shot. If the shaft turns more than a revolution, check the hubs first. They are the "weak link" in the driveline at that point. If the shaft will not move more than about a 1/4-1/2 inch in either direction proceed to the next step.
With the front hubs UNLOCKED, put the transfer case in 4H or 4L and perform the same test. If the driveshaft will turn a full revolution the transfer case has failed internally and will need to be rebuilt at the very least.
Perform BOTH tests regardless of the outcome. You could have a compound problem.

Got my 4X4 working, it was indeed the locking hubs. Now my new problem, seems everytime i go into water fast, it will putter and die down. I dont know if it is maybe the heads getting wet or if it needs a tune up. I just thought i would see if anyone else has experienced this problem before?
