4X4 Stuck On

Hi, I have an ('89 F-150, 4.9L, 4-speed, 4x4, 138,000)and the other day I broke off my 4x4 shifter. (I guess I'm just too buff). Anyway, the bolts had rusted through. My problem is, I won't be able to get it welded or whatever for a few days, and I know I'm not supposed to drive on dry pavement with all four wheels grabbing. Can I just unlock the hubs and free the wheels or should I just drive slow? I've been under the truck and I tried to disengage with tools on hand, but no luck.

I hate driving under 40.

I wouldnt unlock the hubs & drive it . If you get the pressure off the drive line you should be able to disengage the the transfer case with no trouble using a pair of vise grips on the linkage . Park on a level surface ,Unlock the hubs , apply the E brake , trans in neutral , it should go to 2H with a little effort .
