Wonky wipers

Turned my windshield wipers on today and they worked for a bit and then they stopped, did some snooping and found the arm fell off the wiper motor. So I reached up and pushed the arm back on the splined shaft and it worked for a little while and fell off again. My question is, what holds this arm in place? Is it a snap ring of some kind? If so what size? Thanks in advance.

There is a small tab that locks the arm to the shaft. It's part of the wiper arm and not replaceable separately.

Hmm, I wonder if mines still there? Should I be able to feel it. I don't think I can see up there. Thanks Mike.

I believe there is a small clip that holds arm to motor shaft. Maybe Mike can post a pic of it for you.

A picture would be most wonderful. If I stand on my head can I see up in there? It's pretty tight. I'll try to have a looksee tomorrow.

If I understood you correctly, you are talking about an arm that attachs to the wiper motor up under the dash. I think Mike misunderstood. Sorry, I cant help as I have yet to run into this problem. Mike probably can though as I doubt there is a nut or bolt he hasnt seen/replaced on a 73-79 F series

Yup, I misread that. I thought you were talking about the wiper arm that holds the windshield wiper, not the one on the motor.
I'll get a picture of the arm/motor.

Here's the illustration from the Ford parts catalog. There is a small clip that retains the arm.
There are literally thousands of these clips available. To make it simple, Green Sales, Cincinnati, OH has 326 (800) 543-4959. If you want some more names let me know.

I don't mean to hijack your thread but I was going to post on this topic anyway, figured may as well save space.

Does anyone sell wipers better than what the factory has? Mine are pretty rusty and they don't wipe very well. Maybe they're just crappy blades so I can obviously start with that.

Could be the springs that hold the arms in contact with the windshield are weak. I'd replace the whole arm and use a quality wiper blade.

Sorry guys I should have been more specific, I think I just need a bolt in the end of the wiper motor shaft going by the pictures. I will see if I can feel a small hole in the end of the shaft. Thanks for all the help.

Ok removed the wiper motor today and found the shaft has a stud on it and the nut that holds the arm on was missing. Reinstalled the motor, put the arm on and installed a 1/4" fine thread nut, boom fixed. Thanks to everyone.

I agree. Lol. For the record, removing wiper motors sucks. Actually taking it out wasn't to bad. Putting that sucker back in was a challenge.
