wirring harness question f-150 engine swap (302 manual trans-460 auto trans)
I will be starting my 302-460 swap after my tax return comes and I am making up the rest of my parts list. I am putting a 91 460 efi in my 92 truck and I noticed the engine connectors for the wiring harness are different. I do have the ecu for the 460. Will I need a different wiring harness or does someone make an adapter for this kind of engine swap?

I would hazard a guess that there's no adapter available. This is not a common swap, and you will have to consider more than the ECM side--the 302 have slightly different sensors in different locations, so even if a particular connector fits, it may not reach.
Have you considered the effect of the added engine weight on your front suspension? The F150 suspension from this era was iffy from the factory (and the F150 never got the 460), never mind adding several hundred pounds beating on it from a heavier engine and higher torque.

You should be able to make the 5.0 engine harness work.. strip some tape and wire loom and stretch things out a little, there is no adapter or simple harness interchange on a swap like this you would be into wire splicing to fit something from another truck. The 7.5L computer will plug right in however and work fine as long as both trucks were equipped with the same transmission, hopefully you're not trying to put a 7.5/E4OD combo into a truck that didn't have an E4OD to begin with... because there is a whole bunch of wiring missing.

Which automatic trans is it. Overdrive or non-overdrive. If its not od then take existing 302 harness apart and make it fit and put 460 ecu in.
If it is overdrive then find a 92 truck with a 460 automatic and put the wiring in yours.
F250/350 cabs are the same as F150s so the harness is a plug and play thing. Go junkyard hopping and find one cheap.

If you're going e4od then you'll need the entire harness to the transmission. The manual harness is missing some plugs, and the 91 and 92 are different enough to make it a pain in butt to just drop it in. I suggest plug and play vs rewiring any day. Especially when it's available for that truck.
I run my 92 reg cab shortbed carbd 460 with the 8.8 and d44 ttb front for a few years. Never babied it once, and I never broke anything. I even did 4wd drag launches and donuts and stuff. The d44 isn't weak. If you don't mind ride quality just put 1ton van springs in it and cut them to level and align it. I didn't mind the squat and got camber bushings to fix tire angle. I had dual shocks so it wasn't mushy with bumps or corners.

In my opinion the 8.8 in the trucks is quite stout.
31 spline axles are pretty beefy. I've put 400rwhp into my mustangs 28spline axles as well as another 100hp shot of nitrous with drag radials and never broke anything.
The 150 frame is thinner material than the 250/350. But I don't think the difference is an issue unless you're towing heavy stuff. A toy/driver you'll never notice.
If the wheelbase is the same you would only need to redrill some holes for the bed to bolt on and add cab mount.
The d44 isn't an issue with the 460 if you're not plowing or hauling a heavy 5th wheel.
My typical issue with the f150 is the lack of brakes. The rear drums can be upgraded with bigger wheel cylinders but there are little to no upgrades for the front brakes. Maybe add hydroboost for more brake pressure but still have fade and heat build up.
If you have the 250 ttb d50 stuff I'd say put it in for the brakes. Make some coil brackets and do a long arm front suspension is my suggestion. I'd love to keep coils instead of leafs.

I would first decide what you want to do with the truck.
If you don't mind the smaller brakes and easier riding tires, keep the d44 and the 8.8.
If you want to really abuse the truck and big tires and stuff, swap the d50 and the 10.25 in and not worry about breaking stuff.
What you do about coils or leafs is up to you. I'd still like to try a long arm d50 with 1ton coils.
You may need to refit the frame mounts to fit the smaller 150 frame. But it's not impossible. I took my smallblock frame mounts and cut them down for the heavy duty 460 mounts and welded new plates.
As far as checking the 460 I'd see if you can get the donor truck running and see how it runs. Is that truck an overdrive trans also or is it a c6. If its OD then you could graft that wire harness into your truck. If not, then you're still looking for a 92 to steal from.
