Okay, this will undoubtedly sound stupid to some of you, but I have an 88 460. It is complete right down to the external fuel pump, frame horns for the motor mounts, the junk 20+ y/o charcoal canister, etc. Even have a remote oil filter relocation kit and everything to throw an NP435 behind it.
I am acquiring a 1989 (light) F250 4x4, 302 5spd truck this week. The truck is in good enough shape to make into a wheeler, but the 302 is done. By done, I mean it has been blown up and the PO left it in the bed of the truck for a year with no intake, among the elements.
So what will I need (electrically) to put my 60,000 mile 460 in this truck, is it all plug n play? Would I need to switch fuel pumps? Sorry for sounding like a noob, but I am Not sure if maybe the wiring harnesses are diff in any way & I'm wanting to get my ducks in a row.
Thanks guys!
So the 460 is EFI? If so this is a fairly straight forward transplant once you get it physically mounted. The wiring harness is pretty much the same for all V8s but you will need a 460 computer and some minor wiring changes may be necessary if you want to use the existing harness..(consult a shop manual and compare harness details). If you happen to have the computer and the matching and complete(engine to computer) engine wiring harness then a complete swap is also possible but I'm not sure it would be easier than making the changes necessary to the 5.0 harness. The engine harness is pretty much a stand-alone piece on this vintage truck but there are several power and ground points to contend with and a few wires go to the dash cluster as well. If you only have the portion of the engine harness between the block connectors and the motor then it's probably of no use to you, there is no guarantee it will be pinned the same as the other portion in the truck.
I have the complete engine harness and the computer. It's all out of an 88, and the truck is an 89....but anyway, I think you've pretty much answered my question. Thank you!!
