My recent incident was also at a very conservative speed. I really don't like all of the computer controlled safety stuff, but I will say the ABS worked very well for me on an long downhill stretch of black ice this past winter. I suspect I would have come to a stop without ABS, but no way I could have modulated the brakes so efficiently.
FYI, the manual says the TCS (traction control) is the only feature totally disabled by the dash switch. The other Advance Trac features (RSC, ESC) are re-enabled at 35MPH. ESC is apparently re-enabled with a higher activation threshold.

I disable tc most of the time and feel I gain performance by doing it.

I do the same. I definitely helps..
