I have a brown 1979 F100 shortbed that I am slowly getting in shape. My husband and I are at the point where we need to start sanding and priming for a new paint job. The problem is...he wants the truck to change colors, and I want to keep it brown.
The truck was his grandfather's - he bought it brand new in 1979. It has a good solid body, and the inside is in near mint condition. My husband inherited it after his grandfather's death. But now, he wants to make the truck "his", and so wants it silver/grey. I think this is a lot of extra work...but then again, I have never done any paint job work or pre-paint job work on a car or truck.
So, my question is: should we paint the truck silver, and make my husband happpy, or keep it the original brown? Which is easier to do?
I wouldn't consider changing the stock color of any vehicle especialy one so near mint condition... For one, you have the extra work of masking the interior to paint the door edges and posts..The interior matches brown so I doubt it would blend in with gray... If you live in the Phoenix area as your name implies, and I do also, you know grey or blue are the worst colors to hold up in this sun.... Just M.H.O. .... Good luck...
No one understands, he doens'nt want to drive grandfathers "brown" truck, he wants to drive HIS own truck, that he knows that was well taken care of, but he doesnt want to think of it as someone else's truck, so by painting it it would become his own... At least thats what I think...
It is a LOT of work to change the color of a vehicle and do it right. It is less work to change it to a similar color so the interior matches. But contrasting colors like from brown to silver requires the most work, nothing looks right together.
To do the job properly requires that you completely disassemble the truck.
how about a new stripe kit, with some different graphics, maybe some window tint, new set of wheels ?
Things like that can easily make the truck "his"!@
It worked for me on my 79..... never did paint that poor truck. lol
Well if your willing to shell out the cash for a "quality" paint job it will look better than when new. the new polyuethane base coat/clear coat jobs are really nice. You could also make it two/tone. does it have race track trim? I painted the inside of the trim silver to go with my green.
