Question I can't answer

This was asked to me: Is the original spring hanger holes in the front frame horns?

Me: I have no idea what you're talking about.

Him: It's on the frame outsdie near where the bumper mounts. Where we need to determine the crossmember center line.

Any Ideas guys?

PS-We are installing a HEidts' crossmember

Answer: no, the front spring hangers do not mount on the front horns near the bumper, they mount on the frame under the fenders well back of the bumper. The Heidts crossmember should have come with instructions on determining the centerline location. Contact Heidts for instructions. If the rear axle is still installed you could measure the wheelbase length forwards from the rear axle if all else fails. Note: most IFS crossmembers are installed 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" further forward than the original axle centerline on 53-56 trucks to better visually center the wheel in the fender arch.

You could measure from any landmark you want (neighbor's fence post?) as long as you know what that measurement is supposed to be. Ah, that is the rub!

I'd heed AX's warning and call Heidts if instructions can't be found online. That's a nice crossmember to be installing almost where it belongs. You're going to kick yourself if you have to try to work around it later.

You can go online to www.heidts.com and see the instructions. After you get there click on 'crossmembers' then on 53 to 56 ford trucks. Then you can go to a PDF file with pictures and instructions ,all done good and clear.

It has been a while since I worked on mine but I seem to remember measuring from a hole in the bottom of the frame rail. I cant confirm this but it seems to stick out in my mind that there is a hole near or at center line in the arch of the rail that I used for reference once i had removed the original suspension.

The front of the frame horn isn't perfectly squared off, so I measured at the bottom.
1953 F-100 (1953-1956 should be the same)
Front of frame to centerline of shackle pin: 17" (That's the big hole)
Front of frame to centerline of original front axle: 37 5/8"

I guess 54-56 has same frame dimensions, but not 53. I'll keep researching

What's different about the '53?
I know the '53 and 54 rear springs are different than the '55 and '56, but I thought the front is the same from '53 - '56.
