Piston Removal Question

F150, 4.6 (Windsor), Manual Trans, Manual T-Case, 200,000mi

I'm going to start my head gaskets this week, and my brother is trying to get me to do the piston rings as well. He is saying that I can drop them through the oil pan. My question is, is this correct? Or even worth it? Before I blew the head gasket, I was burning off about 2-3qts of oil between changes (I would add a qt in between changes).

I have done head gaskets before (4.0 Explorer), but haven't tackled pistons. We do have access to a handful of family friends who are mechanics/have rebuilt motors, so I'm not too worried about not having help if I get stuck.

The truck has 200k on it, and I don't really have the cash for a new motor or truck.

Also, I will be doing this job in a buddies enclosed shop, so that will be nice.

Thanks,

Daniel

The pistons come out through the top with the heads off. You will need to take the oil pan off the get to the rod bolts.
