Trouble Code P0500

I just bought a '99 F-250 with a 5.4. Speedo doesn't work up to 25 MPH, and it is hesitant to shift from first unless i get on the throttle a little.

A quick scan and trouble code P0500 showed up. (vehicle speed sensor)

Will a bad sensor make it shift funny?

Yes, because the PCM does not know how fast you are going.

Thanks. Code reader says "vehicle speed sensor A" is there more than one?

No, there is only one. It is on top of the rear differential.
