transmission install tips?

Alright guys, tried last weekend to install the tranny back into the truck, got it up there all lined up, tried putting it in 3 times and no luck, looked in the whole, and the clutch disk had moved out of allignment with the pilot bearing.

So we got it all lined up again this weekend, tried it again and the clutch disk moved again, so toko the bell housing off, loosened the pressure plate, re loctited everything, AGAIN. And we're gonna try again tomorrow, we only have a jack to use. i'm gonna go get me a small dental mirror so i can see the clutch disk splines and line them up.

A tip i heard was if you can grab the output shaft, put the transmission in 4th gear so you can turn the input shaft while you try and line it up...

Once the pressure plate is tightened down, the clutch can't move. Think about it, if the clutch disc moves, then it would be slipping if you were driving the truck. Something about this seems fishy to me. Are you using a clutch alignment tool to set and hold the clutch in place while you tighten the pressure plate bolts?

And I'll second what Otahyoni said. You can use any gear really, the idea is so you can wiggle around the input shaft to line all the splines up.

well we re torqued all the bolts b ack down, and it could have been iw as frustrated and at an awkward angle but it lokoed like it had moved againm, and yes we use the tool. the book lists 29 ft/lbs for the pressurep late, and the manual says to put it in reverse to remove the tranny

You probably were at a bad angle then. Its hard to match the angle of the input shaft, both vertically and horizontally, have it at the right position, both vertically and horizontally, then push it in straight. Problem is, unless its its level horizontally, you have to raise it slightly while pushing in to keep the input shaft aligned. I can see it being a pain if you just have a regular car jack. Good news is it sounds like you're working with someone. I've had my tranny out 3 times, and its only been by myself each time. Luckily I have one of those tranny jack adapters, so I can get the angles matched up a little easier.

In the OP's other posting he stated he was bleeding the clutch with the transmission out. That's why his disc slipped out of alignment.

What Techgod said, angle is everything, even just a bit off and it won't line up to slide in. A transmission jack helps, another member here has pictures of installing the transmission with a cherry picker into his cab with a chain through the access hole in the tranny hump holding up the transmission.

Perseverance is everything, keep trying, it'll go together.

Here is Alvin's post with his links at the bottom for the pictures of how he lifted the transmission through the cab. Pretty good idea, IMO.

Doesn't matter if you use reverse or a forward gear, you just want to be able to turn the shaft a little to line up the splines.

Yeah chevy your right, we did away with that after the 3rd try and we are leaving it alone till the tranny is in. I seriously doubt getting a new clutch and disk is the right approach. the disk is definitely thicker than my previous clutch which did not slip at all, so i'm going with the 150lb. tranny is moving it while trying to line it up. trying it again here in about 30 mins, i'll let yall know.

that is a really good idea about the cherry picker.. only problem is... im missing a cherry picker i thought of using the same size mounting bolts for the tranny to the bell housing but bought 4 longer ones, sawed the heads off, and will use them like line up shafts to get it up there, if we can line the front of it up on the bolts i can get a ratcheting strap to support the back. hopefully this will be it fellas.

I'm gonna have to go rent a tranny jack or a cherry picker or something guys. this is impossible with a jack that leaks down.

Using a couple bolts as mounting studs will definitely help you hold it in place while you put in the first few mounting bolts. They will also help line it up before you slide it home. Little tip on your homemade studs, cut a slot in the end of them so you can use a screwdriver to take them out. After the tranny is sitting there, it might be hard to turn them by hand.

Well after today fellas. the clutch disk moved AGAIN it seems. and we made 0 progress. the slope of the body forces us to tilt the tranny backwards angling the input shaft upwards in order to even get it far enough frowards to line it up, so to tilt it back we have to jack it up and aim the input shaft into the throwout bearing, moving the TO bearing and clutch fork around which isn't a huge deal but once we get there we just cannot line it up at all with the clutch disk splines. I have no other ideas here, we'll try it again i guess and then have to call a wrecker to come get it and have it put in somewhere to fix our mistake..
really dissapointed in myself at this point.

How are you holding up the rear of the engine?

When I put the idi into my chassis without anything holding the rear of the engine it wanted to drop down at the rear. Had to put a jack under the rear to hold it at the correct angle.

So if you've got something holding up the rear of the engine lower it so that it is angled towards the floor.

This should give you more room above the transmission to line up the input shaft.

I've done this with a cleveland engine in my old ute.

Did you remove the tranny cover from the floorboard? That will give you some more room above the tranny to work with.
Just had a random crazy idea... roll the windows down, put a 4x4 (or 2) through the windows positioned over the tranny. That hopefully will give you enough clearance to stick a come along, or at least some rope, in there to hold the tranny up while you fiddle around with it.
