what does it take to make an idi motor run . ie if i wanted to put one in a custom frame what wiring is required i know the latter 7.3 is a lot of sensors ect... i want to build a old project of mine and put a 7.3 in it. have you guys ever put a motor in some thing that didnt have it before?

really all you need is 12 volts to the fuel shut off switch in the injector pump.
if it is cold you will need the glow plugs working though, or always be able to park near 120 volt outlet to plug in the block heater. .

Ya just 12v, iirc just the 1 wire, as it splits off and does the FSS, HPCA, and the GPR all by itself. As far as guages and what not, i just used my 79 sending units in the IDI and left it at that.

As long as your going manual, It is like stated, 1 12 volt wire to the FSS will make her run. If you have an E40D hooked up to that thing, there is a lot more to it.

Good luck, and lots of pictures. We like pictures!

Mac.

What about a tachometer, do you think it is possible to the factory sensor with an aftermarket tach?

thanks guys that sounds alot simpler than messing with the updated one . i need to do some reading on how this motor works im comfortable with the latter model. i like the power of my 99 but it is rather fancy with elect , sensor , ect... i like mechanical stuff better . when i get to it ill get pics i have an old bronco frame that has been stripped down and a custom made tube upper section with a nascar late model center and sort of a sprint car frt and back.

Right now the "limit" of the IDI is verging on 500bhp, so the potential is there we just dont have a pump that will bolt on that will give us more fuel. So if youre interested in making it go check out www.idiperformance.com

If youre into a little "light" reading check out NMB2 and RacinNdrummins build threads.

a stock 7.3 IDI with a turbo, turned up injector pump, 3 inch high flow exhaust, and open element air filter like the 6637 will be about equal to a first generation powerstroke.

so what im getting reading here is the 7.3 version comes without a turbo or with one is this correct? 2-3 5-7 pounds of boost wow not much. im hitting 30 -35 with my set up now in the hotter tunes! about 10-20 in stock tune. my truck now is about 400hp 800 fp pretty damm powerful im not sure if this style of motor will work for what i want. now i have the stuff i took off of my early bird 99 ie turbo / spider / pedistall / up pipes / ect... and its all in good shape . im a body man and been for 25 years so fabbing or stuffing some thing in where it wasnt is no problem but i might need to step up the 94-97 powerstroke to get the power i want. thanks for your responces it will save me time in researching stuff.

the 7.3 turbo IDI was way under rated, because Ford wanted to hype the new powerstroke.
that is why the turbo engine was only rated 20 hp more than the non turbo ..
and the downpipe is restricted so bad it is crushed almost flat.
put a 3 inch downpipe on the turbo, and remove the restrictive muffler and these engines have no problem seeing 10 psi boost.
another thing is, these engines also have 21:1 compression ratio. the powerstroke is only around 17 or 19 to 1 compression. the higher compression ratio makes a big difference.

93-94.5 IDIs were available with a turbo option. The turbo was mostly for high altitude performance and fuel economy not so much power. A maxxed NA pump with a turbo and exhaust is 200+whp. A stock 7.3idi is good to 15-20psi boost. Stud it, and so far theres been 30+ on stock compression, a cam will help here too.

To put things in perspective, as ive been told a performance HPOP is around 240cc of fuel, the DB4 hybrid will push 180cc. Figure around 2.7hp / cc of fuel for an IDI.

Real performance with the IDI is relatively new, if you want to know more start reading the threads i mentioned earlier. Racin dynod 342whp with a 150cc pump and roasted clutch.

Therefor, im not seeing why you would choose the later model when you want 1: something simple and easy to install, and 2: something that will achieve 400/800.
