There was just a thread in the excursion forum and the guy had the exact same symptoms. It was his thermostat and what we learned from that thread is only replace it with a genuine ford stat.

I did put a new failsafe thermostat in...think I should put a factory one in?
Well being Ford t-stats are made by the same company that supplies most part houses that's not always the case. Could be he just got a bad one.
I've replaced a handful of temp sending units with these symptoms and have done t-stats as well. Could be either one...
If I remember correctly he put in 3 or 4 aftermarket stats all of which were different manufactures and they all failed. He put in an oem one and problem solved. Thats enough evidence for me to to not waste my time on a parts house stat.
Give these guys a call they support the site and are very good
and the prices beat almost everyone out there Tousley Ford Parts Depot
This way you get a GOOD Ford pard not some Chinese crap
from the local auto parts box store.

That could be depending on where they came from. I use nothing but aftermarket Stant in anything. Being a mechanic, I do a few too. But the Advanced and AutoZones of the world use garbage. If you buy a good one, it's likely from an OE supplier anyways.
It doesn't even look like the right t-stat, that aftermarket one. Wonder what brand it was?
I am not sure on the brand, this was a very long thread and he posted about the problem at least 3 times. If I get really bored tonight I will try to sift through his posts and see if I can find a brand.
