overheating?

i have an 89 e250 5L and the temp quage hovers at the end of normal before hot with no eng codes. it has always been in the middle. i have changed the radiator cap, 195 F thermostat, temp sending unit and still the same. the temperture of the coolant in the radiator is about 195 F. is 195 close to overheating? how can i check the gauge or sending unit? should i change the coolant temperature sensor?

You stated that you put a 195 thermastat in, so the temp of the coolent should be 195 to open the thermastat. In short, no, 195 is not overheating it is perfectly normal. There are several things to check if the engine is in fact overheating but you did not say that it actualy was, only that the gauge was reading hot. I would suggest heading to the electrical forum and searching there for the correct tests for the gauge itself. Franklin2 seems to really know his electrical stuff.

You might want to flush the system, and go to a lower temp thermostat. Make sure you have the right amount of coolant. 195 is ok to run with the right coolant, but if you want to bring it down try a 185. Is your fan working right? Is the shroud in tact? My 79 always ran hot, but it had no shroud. Good luck with it.
