7.3L Question

Hello I have a 1996 F-250 with a 7.3L diesel engine. When I accelerate the truck from a stop I started noticing a noise coming from what appears to be near the floor heat vents. It sounds like air by passing. The truck will also do this while on cruise down the highway. You will be driving and then hear what appears to be air bypassing down by your feet, the truck will decelerate a few mph, then the air sound will go away and truck will speed up to original speed. Any Ideas on what could be going on here? Thanks

That is your Exhaust Back Pressure Valve aka EBPV. It is a choke for the exhaust. it closes to help the engine warm up faster. But often they go bad an close when they do not need to, The restricts the airflow out of the turbo which in turn make the engine loose power. Most Unplug the solenoid that operates it(the truck warms up fine with out it) The plug is located on the drivers side of the engine, right below where the intake hose meets the turbo. It is the ONLY 2 wire plug there

What your hearing is the Exhaust Back Pressure Valve closing. It's perfectly normal, when the engine oil temp is below a certain temperature it will close a butterfly valve in the exhaust, making the engine work harder and thus warm up faster.

FYI you have a Powerstroke. you would want to post in the Powerstroke section NOT the 6.9-7.3 IDI section.
