She's starting to make some noise in the front, idling and when Erving up, it can be heard on the highway, it sounded like the power steering, but I have ruled it out. By chance can the fan make a constant similar whine that the power steering does, it's not quite that similar but it's the best way to describe it. I pulled into the parking lot this morning and it was making a rattling/ticking noise, then it stopped when I revved it up a bit. Any ideas would be great thanks
Alternator, Water pump and some idlers.
Take a long screwdriver and place your ear on the handle
put the tip on or near each item and listen to the sounds.
Alternators can make a bad squeal as the bearings go.
The water pump will tend to have a tiny bit of leakage
at the weep hole. So if you can see it and check for stains.
Idlers you may be able to test by removing the belt and giving
then a spin and also see if they have any side play.
While your doing all of this when you have the belt off if it's
been some time you may as well replace that.
Worst case, Cam phasers, failed timing chain tensioner, or worn guides. I would start with the above. I had an idler go out on my 03 Crown Vic and it sounded like the engine had major problems.
well alittle investigating and found that the belt tensioner pulley bearing seized and broke in which case it rolled the pulley around wearing it away... getting it fixed right away, gotta say tho, my truck has yet in the 5 years ive owned her never let me down she just keeps on going and getting me home.
thanks for the help all and will post some pics soon of the damage for future ford owners to use.
well with the tensioner Replaced and new belt on the truck is running great! thanks to everyone that threw ideas my way its greatly appreciated, its interesting as to how much that tensioner actually affects, like the truck feels alot better then it did prior to the tensioner failing.
