7.3 Rebuilding ???

Ok guys, I'm starting to put the old horse back together (with the factory manuals ). My Question is since this is a stock rebuild do I need to put in new injector cups? The heads have been gone through by the machine shop and they didn't want to touch the injector cups ( they have had problems with getting them to seal ). The motor has 167,000 on it and I'm thinking just do it but what are your thoughts? Clay looks like he has a good setup. Also will blue loctite be ok for the rod bolts, Oil cooling jet bolts etc? Oil cooling jets have been welded (thanks guys for that one ). Any tips or tricks would be great ( done alot of searching but may have missed something ) Thanks Ray

Jeffreyt will be the best to answer the cup issue. He just finished installing new cups at my place last weekend. Then drove from South Texas back to Florida.

The general consensus on cups is if the ain't broke don't mess with them. It's just like a plumbing job. Once you dig in it can cause more problems. If you didn't have fuel in the coolant before then they weren't cracked.

I did mine a year or two ago with no probs but if you don't get one to seal properly you will have to find out which one and re do it.

However it would be a lot easier and a better chance of the sealing properly without the fluids n there....when in rebuilding stage

Jason you bring up some good points. Is there a way to check the sealing before putting on the heads? Thanks Ray

have your machine shop pressure test the heads after install.

Man Ted, you throw my name out there like it's worth something lol

It's really a catch 22 in my opinion. It would be super easy to do with the engine out and dry. Shouldn't take 30 minutes to pull the old and re seat the new. Definitely get the mating surfaces clean with a wire brush or injector cup brush (clay has the ford part number for the brush in his instructions). You'd regret not doing it while it was out if you wound up with fuel in the coolant a few months down the road. Then again if you do it and one doesn't seal, now you've got a little bit of fuel and maybe even oil showing up, and you've got to figure out which one to look at and replace.

I think Roland or maybe Bob had talked about pressurizing the coolant system just a bit and looking for leaks or bubbles in each of the cups. I'd say put about 10psi on it and see if it leaks down any. I don't think you can hurt anything by doing that. If it holds I'd personally let it ride. If not, I'd replace them all, then retest after they have cured.

You could fabricate what you need for the pressure test pretty easy with plumbing parts...

Jeff, I don't mean to throw you under the bus. You are the last one I have seen that has done this very thing recently. I knew you would have a good answer and that is why I told them you would chime in eventually. I will make sure to be kind when I do it.

No no, I'm flattered lol. I wouldn't consider myself the best to answer anything, but I'm glad to help with what I've learned and know. Feel free to ask me to chime in on anything anytime.

Were the heads hot tanked? If so I would replace the cups, If not you would probably be okay, and they can be tested.

NO They put them in a enclosed pressure washing station.
