just joined this forum cause i am a new owner of a 1990 ford bronco full size and i am having a problem. mine makes a grinding noise when shifting out of second or third gear until i let off the gas a little then it completes the shift. does the same thing when downshifting. it has the AOD transmission and is sitting on 33'x14.5in super swamper tires with i believe a 3 or 4 in lift(no sure on that). can anybody give me some pointers on what might be the problem. was told at sell that the tranny is fairly new.
there should not be any grinding sound during shifts. Start with basic trans fluid check. Fluid should be between the holes on the dipstick when cold and on level surface not running. Fluid should be on hatched area when at temperature operating and running in park.
confirm that trans is AOD.
Then put truck on jack stands and carefully check operation with wheels off ground, just stay in low gear. try to locate area creating grinding noise, is it the trans? Transfer case? driveline? Wheel tires?
Take truck to Ford dealer for correct and proper repair the first time.
as mentioned double check that you in fact have that tranny. do you have an over drive button either on the dash or end of gear shifter? if so then you have an E4OD.
once we get confirmation from you on exactly what we are dealing with we can then give further ideas
