i picked up this explorer up for 650 dollars running and driving. it does have some tranny issues tht i would like to get figured out asap and i will have a good solid truck.
im not shure what tranny it has, im geussing the a4ld witch i thought only came in 2wd models.
anyways, put my 92 in od and take off. all is as it should be shifts fine all the way to od. get in od and it will slip out of gear at times. i drove it about 10 miles or so tonite it only did it twice. both were down grades completely off the gas to coast. got back on the gas and it jus reved. i let it coast to around 45mph then the trans caught back and was fine the rest of the way home.
my 92 explorer needs valve cover gaskets and a rear main seal but for 650 and no rust. want to figure out what my tran issues are before i pull it to do the rear main seal and want to do the seal like asap so any and all input is greatly appreciated.
i would like to explore every possiable option before i plan for a rebuild if possiable. if i do have to rebuild im looking at parts from transwerks to build a solid reliable a4ld. ive heard they can be made into pretty good trans with some modding.
but like i said. it only does it in od. all other forward gears and reverse are as they should be. hard to think about a rebuild when its only od im haveing trouble with.
so i jus went out and checked the tranny fluid cold and it is full. fluid dosent smell burnt. it smells like old fluid and i belive it is time for a trany flush and some new fluid but i would like to resolve my issues before hand unless old fluid might be the culprit..
any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
it runs and shifts fine like a sluggist factory auto tranny should. it pulls fine. seems like it dont wana gear down somtimes. it only seems to slip out of od when i let off the gas or go to coast. as long as im on the throttle its fine, but if i let off or go to coast, when i get back on the gas its neutral. sometimes shifting to drive or neutral and back to od corrects it. when it does slip out of od, i can leave it in gear and coast to or under 45mph and it will lock back up and go.. seems like it may be a bad tc but i would like to find a way to issolate the problem.
i have checked the vacum lines at the t on the intake and they are all dry. i havent checked the line at the modulator yet on account of the weather and wrk. i was qouted 2500 dollars for one of doug hambys tranny's and i cant justifiy spending tht much on it right now.
it really seems like somthing fairly simple and i hope it is cause my kids have to ride in this.
does this seem like the tranny is on its way out? i was hopeing it might be a bad tc. is the only way to correct the problem rebuilding
Try adding more fluid my 01 f250 with the 4r100 likes to run a 1 qt over the full line at a idle all warmed up if I don't it shifts hard and at odd times
but careful people say that can hurt if there is to much ?
I don't know anything about the inner workings of transmissions, but before giving up you may consider trying something easy. This may not even apply to your problem but it's worth a try...On the drivers side of the intake manifold, there's a vacuum "tree" that has several vacuum lines going to it. One of them goes to the transmission modulator, which is a vacuum diaphragm mounted on the passenger side of the transmission. Pull off the vacuum lines going to the "tree" and see if there's tranny fluid there. If so, you have a bad modulator.
