92 Explorer transmission

My 92 Explorer has a A4LD transmission. The trans has no gears at all. No forward in any gear or reverse. A few days ago it was leaking trans fluid from somewhere. Fluid level is normal, fluid appears brown. Could this be the pump? Any help is appreciated.

sound like a new tranny is in order for you brown fluid mean it's burnt from.
1) being run low on fluid
2) tranny slipping

99.9% of the tranny shops will insits on a complete rebuild and on this case it will be true.

my 93 would leak when it built pressure up. like climbing a large hill,
or kicking passing gear in the vertic was
bad front pump but it needed a complete rebuild

that costed me $1500 here

sorry for the bad news

If the fluid level is normal! Most common leak is the front seal. Have you tried it in manual 1 or 2? Forward and reverse use seperate clutches so this is unusual unless you snapped te input shaft. Was there any event associated with this? if this is 4WD it could be a problem with the transfer case. try switching into 4WD. This is an easy transmission to work on if you want o rebuild it yourself. I found it a lot of fun.

Thanks for the replies. It doesn't move at all in manual 1,2,D,OD, or reverse. It doesn't move in 4 wheel drive either. The trans would leak intermitently. Last time out it didn't leak, it just stopped without any loud or unusual noises. Do I need any special tools to rebuild this transmission? Do you know of any manuals and parts suppliers? Thanks Again

Was the trans slipping before it went out?? Seems a bit strange that you would lose everything all at once, unless you ran it completely dry....

This is a rather easy transmission to rebuild and the parts are cheap. Bulkpart.com is a good source for the manual $16. The basic stuff and the manual will be about $100. Have to tear it apart to see what is wron so count on a second order of $60-120.
You can do it without special tools if you don't remove the pump but you will have to make some easy tools.

The trans did slip a few days before it broke, but then it shifted fine. The fluid level was always full. Either way this thing is broke. I am going to rebuild it. Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it.

Jake:You just described how my trans went bad.It was all of a sudden. And i just rebuilt it 150 mile ago by myself.I have a pressure leak somewhere im surmising. Yeah the guys right about the rebuild. The automatic isnt that complicated as far as parts replacing. Its only complicated if you are the guy inventing it. The only special tool youll need is a C clamp to compress the clutch pack springs. If you pull the front pump from the bell housing (to replace the front bushing) theres supposed to be special tools to realign it so that the torque converter has the proper oil clearance in the new bushing.Theres a way to do this without the special tools. Go for it jake...its really not that hard ...youll be completely surprised. Im going to yank mine back out tommorrow(if it stops raining)........jon

92 Explorer transmission

Greetings,

I was just wondering if anyone in the Niagara or Southern Ontario area knows where I can get a service manual for overhauling the automatic A4LD and the 5R55e trannies? I am going to repair my old A4LD, and would like to get a manual on it.

Thanks,

Hoppy

When you got the new one! Thought you had given up on rebuilding that A4LD. I went to ATC the other day just to check them out as another local supplier and they wanted $22.50 for the 5R55E manual. Told me I had to pay retail. Bulkpart only charges $16 but you have to have $100 total if you live in an exotic foreign country like Canada. Get a couple manuals, basic rebuild kit, filters and some clutches and you are all set. $7.50 shipping is cheaper than drivng out of the hills.

Help!!!

I am yanking out the A4LD from my brothers 92 Ranger 2WD. I did not think to remove the filler tube before cutting the bell loose, but that is not inportant at the moment because even if I have to mangle it, I have the one from the junk yard unit I'm putting back in.

What I am not so sure of is do I need to remove the exaust in order to get the bell to clear and pull back past the (non-removable) cross-member towards the front of the truck?

A quick reply would be appreciated since this is costing $20 a day for the trans jack rental, plus however much a day it's costing my bro to rent a car.

I used to pull transmissions for Aamco, and I don't remember it being this hard, of course this is the first time I have tried doing this on the ground.
