I sometimes wonder if the ICP being located under the turbo is getting to hot. The excessive heat causes the voltage to fluctuate.

  1. TURBO LEARN PROCEDURE:
  1. NOTE:
THE VGTDC WILL BE COMMANDED TO VARIOUS LEVELS DURING THE LEARN PROCESS CAUSING CHARACTERISTIC TURBO SPOOLING NOISE. THIS NOISE IS NORMAL.
  1. Clear the KAM by disconnecting both batteries for 5 minutes.
  2. Reconnect both batteries.
  1. Start the vehicle and let the vehicle idle. If the conditions below are correct, the learn will occur automatically.
  1. NOTE:
DURING VEHICLE IDLING, MONITOR PIDS VGTLRN_OK AND VGTVP_LE. ONCE THE PCM HAS LEARNED, THE VGTLRN OK PID WILL READ -YES- AND THE VGTVP_LE WILL BE AT 6 OR HIGHER. IF NOT, MONITOR PID VGTLRN_CNC. IF THE PID READS -YES- THEN THE CONDITIONS ARE NOT CORRECT FOR THE PCM TO LEARN. THE REQUIRED CONDITIONS ARE:
  • EOT between 120-250° F (49-121° C).
  • Idle speed between 570 to 780 RPM.
  • VSS reading less than 2 MPH (3 Km/h).
  • APP below 1.5%.
  • EGR is commanded off (EGRDC = 0).
  • No hard fault DTCs.
NOTE:NOTE: IF THE ABOVE CONDITIONS ARE NOT MET, THE PCM WILL NOT LEARN THE NEW VGT STRATEGY.

My VGT is working good. I know the relearn process and have been through it many times. I'd just like to know how you could just "lose" the KAM while driving down the highway. And why only the VGT and not the tranny?

Its not the KAM, just the vgt learn. Happens when one or more of the previously mentioned perameters get out of spec. The vgt will be working well. Its the programming thats the concern.

The problem is so intermittent that it'll be hard for me to know if this helps or not.

Matt and the IPR

Anybody know how Matt's tunes affect the IPR? If closed, I figure the state of the IPR screen does not matter. If open, I guess the screen does matter.

I think its a good idea to always have the screen on the IPR and be clear of debris

If it's closed, is anything going through it?

the IPR controls the high pressure oil going to the injectors so no matter what kind of tune you have it has to open and close all the time. If it was fully closed all the time or open all the time there would be no reason to have a gas pedal.

I agree that the problem seems to be heat related. Whether engine temp or air temp determines it, I'm not sure. It could be that the higher air temp leads to higher engine temps and thus the problem. It will be interesting to see if my new external oil cooler takes care of the temp problem and thus the rolling idle problem, both at the same time.

My Truck currently has the PID saying conditions are not met to relearn. I've checked your items below if they are being met and they all are. The only one I'm not sure of is hard DTC faults. The only faults I have is a software incompatible with the FICM.

I suggest you start your own new thread.Include copy and paste of the table they provided. This one is nearly ten years old and I don't see any of the highly knowledgeable members in it.
