Can anyone tell me just which one of the terminals on my alt. is the stator terminal or wire, I want to run a wire directly from it to the choke, because for some strange reason that little relay box on the firewall on the drivers side shorted out and when I finally found a replacement there was no fire going to the choke when the engine was running, so I unplugged the choke wire and completely leaned the choke out so the butterfly wouldn't close while I was driving. Now with the colder weather coming I would like to use the choke to get away from the hard starting. The truck is a 1986 F250 5.8 or 351W factory holley. Thanks to all in advance: JohnB1986
Gary, thanks for the respponse, but the alt on my truck is a transistorized type and does not have the terminal that you are referring too on it, I will just find the wire that is hot when the engine is running and use it.
The funny thing is I thought that I had the alt like the one you sent a pic of, so since I don't, I will just trace a wire with fire in it when the engine is running and use it
If you have a factory 4 barrel (4180) you will find that the single terminal Motorcraft choke element is connected to the stator wire which is 12V AC, but reads more like 7-8VDC.
If you'd like to hook it up to 12V DC in 'Run' perhaps you should get the 2 terminal Holley 45-258 12V element to keep it from opening too soon.
I have the factory 4180 Holley, but the problem is I wasn't getting fire to the choke through the grey wire that was connected to the choke terminal, so I decided to just connect a wire directly from the alternator's "S" terminal. I just wanted to be sure of the correct terminal on the alt(thanks for the picture) to connect the wire too. Thanks for your help, it was truly appreciated.
Yeah mine went bad, and the battery kept going dead for some reason, and I traced it to that relay, finally found one on ebay but I don't think it is a perfect match because with the engine running there is no fire going to the choke as it was with the old one, that is the reason I was looking for the stator terminal so I could just jump/splice into it and have a choke again.
I wish I had pictures, on my 87 F250 I had to rebuild my alternator harness because it was rubbing against the frame. One of the two main wires was melted away...
Anyway I remember it having that wire to the carb but I forget exactly where it hooked up. I have the 4180.
