My 97 X seems to ride like a tank. You feel every bump in the road. I bought new shocks ( the $15 dollar ones!! yuck!!) I think this may have been a mistake. What is a good brand to try??? I was thinking bilsteins, any other suggestions. It's not 4wd.. Thanks all...
As others will say soon I think, lots of replys on this subject. I just made some changes myself - here is what I found for my 2000 4X4 XLT auto.
I have Goodrich Long Trail tires with lots of tread left so someone must have put those on in place of the Firestones (Only have 38,000 miles) just prior to my buying the vehicle.
I wasn't happy with the ride or body control so I bought 4 Monroe Relfex shocks for a total of about 190 dollars. When I pulled the old ones off - not bad, but the front shocks were starting to fade, one was actually soft.
In the front, the Reflex shocks did make a stability difference and the ride is not any worse. In the rear, not sure it matters, but at least the ride is not worse. However overall the ride is still a little snappy, but it is a leaf spring Explorer.
Probably could have done with the Monroe Sensa-Tracs for a few dollars less, but glad I went with the best available for this vehicle. I am comparing the snappy ride to the new generation Explorers which are just very very smooth and controlled.
Monroe SensaTracs are great. I just got them about 2 weeks ago and I love them. Rides like a new vehicle. I'm sure the Reflex are good, as well. They're just a few bucks more than the SensaTracs. You can find the SensaTracs at Sears for $36.99 each including install. They have them on sale every couple weeks so wait until they go on sale. I researched this quite a bit before I bought them, including a couple of polls. Most people suggested Monroe.
He's right, He's right, He's right.
Go with the Sensa Trac's. I put some on my '95 Ranger in '98
Great ride, improved handleing.
Same results on my dads 88 Ram and my old '95 civic w/ Eibachs.
Sears is right, found the best price there. Look for promotions 'cause some promos are limited to certain dealers (auto zone, NAPA).
