Ernie,
Just finished the front of my 55 and starting on the rear. Had a small bore eye to eye shock and replaced them with a eye to post just because I couldn't find the travel I wanted in an eye to eye. The distance from post to post with the truck sitting on the ground is 13" so I went with a Monroe Sensatrac 1/2" bore with a travel of 10" to 15.5". Had to fab some upper brackets for the new shocks and it never has ridin so good. The reason I started all this is I added a 3" drop axle and am getting ready to add reverse eye mains to the rear so I am sure I will have to do it all again. good luck.
Adding a dropped axle should not necessitate a shock change, but changing springs likely will. Joe's shocks are about the right length, you want about 4" of travel in each direction from their at rest length.
