I'm trying to install a backup camera. I have a Pioneer AVH-P3200BT that will support a camera but am having a hard time finding a good camera and mounting location. I remember seeing something about this but haven't been able to find it. So I'm looking for ideas on which camera to get and the best mounting location.
I have the same unit. I bought one off eBay for 25. It was a wide angle, color, night vision. There is a hole in the bumper behind the top of the liscense plate. I drilled my plate and installed it there. It is for lining up my bumper pull. It worked great till it died. I did not know that it was always on. I didn't tie it into the reverse lights. I just turned it on with the deck when I wanted it. Next one I install will have some sort of switch.
Either it's IR capable with IR illumination, or you need a lot of backup lighting for night viewing.
CCD, not CMOS or whatever else they try to pitch. Bigger is better, but 1/4" CCD pickup is standard.
Hook power up to backup lights or on an illuminated switch (to remind you the power is on). These things were not made to last as long as security cameras.
Read the reviews and pay close attention to remarks on night vision, field of view, durability, and picture quality.
How does it install? Know this for sure before buying.
Does it have range marks? Nice feature, but not necessary.
A $25 camera will disappoint you. $125 camera will deliver the goods. $225 camera will deliver what the $125 camera delivers.
Go metal. No, really... a metal housing.
Make sure the wiring is no less than 7 meters (about 23 feet) long. You have to go over, up, around, and through.
One that meets all the rules and has a number of bonuses: Boyo VTL420SR or VTL400SR. I found it at Amazon for $100 and Sears for $225. You bolt it through the license plate holes. If it was any easier, it would jump out of the box and cling to the truck.
RICH my $25 camera DID NOT disappoint me. It had all the things you listed. If I would have out it on the switch I bet it would still be working. Just saying......
