Anyone have luck fitting a decent back up camera to their Super Duty that originally didn't come with one? I'd like to have an auto dimming rearview mirror that displayed the back up camera image when the truck shifts into reverse.
Have you looked at putting in one of the factory ones? Not sure what year they started with those.
There is a shop in my town that mounts the cameras inside the tail gate and cut out a hole in the tailgate to mount it they fab up their own mounts and not sure e how they mount them inside tailgate if they bolt them or weld them or appoxy
It's a 2010 F250 XLT Super Cab, I emailed Parts Guy Ed and he mentioned he remember seeing where some guys had adapted a mix of factory and aftermarket parts to make a camera work but he wasn't 100% confident on what exactly I would need or the wiring so I though aftermarket might be the way to go. If I had ordered my truck I would have just had the camera added I chose a truck that was on the lot and am adding a camera after the fact.
I bought the handle(part number 8L3Z 9943400) from online somewhere ($70) the camera from Ebay,
and am installing a head/dvd/cam unit.. in the short term I use the wireless Peak system I found from Sam's Club ($50), and the tailgate camera..
the camera mirror can be found on ebay as well. here is one WITH the camera,.. no wiring..
I installed a boyo license plate camera. It wired right into my aftermarket head unit. Works great, but some slight interference I think from the motor. It took about an hour to install. Works good at night too.

did you have to tap into your reverse wiring to auto trigger it when on? if so, which wire? reverse light? in the dash board? ...
reason i ask is, once I order a cam, I will need to do that with my kenwood head unit.
I did the install of the el cheapo chinese deal, just for trailer hook up, so didnt need anything special. However, it turns out, its actually works pretty darn good.
does the cam show when you put it in reverse? or when you goto the option on your head unit?
my head unit has an option to automatically goto reverse cam when I place it in reverse, but I just need to figure out if there's a more convenient place to tap into other than the reverse light.
do you know which wire you tapped into to trigger the reverse?
I hooked into the reverse light at the left rear light housing. I then ran a lead from one of my upfitter switches too. This gives backup and manual camera views
When they install my head unit (soon) they will have to tap into the reverse wire under the dash to let the unit know, same thing needed for the mirror
