Need some clarification

I have a 96 F150 with the 4.9 engine . My rear catalytic converter is getting a little exhaust leak . My question is my truck has two cats on it and Ebay is showing two type of exhausts for this type of truck ? Would it do any harm to the engine to go with the one cat ? I have a friend of mine that just scrapped out his F150 and his front exhaust pipe has the Y coming into one pipe and the attached to the cat . Mine on the other hand has two inlets going into the front cat and a second cat behind that one . Any thoughts ? thanks . I might be able to get pics to help out with showing what I talking about but it won't be today .

I have a '92, I-6, and I cut the second cat out. It had gotten to hot and was damaged. I had the muffler shop removed the first one and weld a new one in and a straight pipe in place of the second cat I had removed.

it doesnt matter the number of cats. what does matter is if it has an 02 sensor after the cat and if it does you need to make sure the cat is good enough to keep it from throwing a code for catalyst efficiency

Thanks for the info . I'm hoping to get this thing under control soon . I can't seem to find the leak . I can hear it in the cab when it's cold but as the engine warms up it get less noticable . I've been under this thing a couple of time and it's driving me nuts because I can't find it . I guess if push comes to shove I can wait until it's real loud and I'll know I'll find it then ...

most likely sounds like a manifold gasket
