I've got a buddy who has a '90 with a 5.8L. He was having power issues, so he took it to his mechanic. Mechanic says he needs a new cat. According to his him, he'd have to replace the entire y-pipe (as he referred to it). Anybody have any info on this kind of fix? How much would one expect to pay for such a repair. He seems to be getting different answers depending on who he asks.
It's actually pretty easy. You'll need a long prybar or spike end bar. Cut the 2nd cat out then just ram the prybar into the exhaust pipe toward the other cat. Keep poking till the honeycomb is pretty well busted up. At this point you have a choice of how to rid yourself of the junk in the cat and pipe. You can use a vacuum cleaner to suck it all out, or do as I did and just start the truck and rev it a few times and blow it all out. Then attach an aftermarket cat into where you cut the old one out and you're all done. I was pricing the y pipe for my 89 at around 350-400 bux. I picked up a hi flow cat w/3"in/outs for 45 on Ebay.
i was going to ram out the inards of my cat on my truck but several people told me that can cause performance problems cause it cause goofy airflow. dont know if tats true but you mite want to check before you go rammin things. hope ya figure it out.
