Question: What automatic transmissions will fit a 1966 f100 (240ci) inline six?
I have scoured the interweb, and the 240/300 was used all the way into 1996. So with that being said, could a 1996 automatic transmission fit my 66 inline six?
I am looking to put a 5 speed automatic transmission with OD into my truck.
No 5ers, but the AOD will fit. 4 speed OD. Select from a truck or V8 car (302) from the '88 to '93 models. You must correctly adjust the TV cable or linkage. (Throttle Valve, controls the trans pressure, determines shifting. Improper adjustment or no cable/linkage = dead trans in very short time) Early models are trouble, don't be fooled by a early '80s "bargain". The later models incorporate many upgrades made by Ford after many, many warranty claims. These can be beefed up as well, if you want to.
What axle ratio and tire do you have? Make sure your 240 will pull OD with your tire and gear.
The "newer" automatics are computer controlled, which would not work on your truck without some serious work. Most anything that's not will work though, as long as it has the correct bolt pattern.
I don't believe there are any 5 speed automatics that are available for the 300, unless there's one I haven't heard of.
The last auto to be released with the 300 was the E4OD, which was a 4 speed, and computer controlled. The AOD would work though, as 85e150 stated.
Lets say I find a good AOD trans to replace the 3 spd (which I know I can, they sell them all day long). Will the AOD trans fit right in without modifications, such as different crossmember, shorting of the drive shaft? I do know that the linkage will have to be changed. I have been looking for persons (write up) who have done conversions from 3 spd to AOD, haven't found them yet.
1978: First year 300 (and 302) available with a C6, but could still have a C4 excepting: 1978/79 F350 300 I-6: C6
AOD introduced in misc 1980 Passenger Cars, 1981 F100/150's. 1980/87 AOD's were turds! STAY AWAY!
People drove in O/D in heavy stop and go traffic. The constant shifting up/down .. in/out of O/D fried the AOD's guts and it didn't take too long for this to occur.
Heat is the mortal enemy of the AOD. Install the largest external trans cooler you can find and STAY OUT of O/D in heavy traffic.
There are a gazillion posts in the 1948/56, 1957/63, 1961/66, 1973/79 forums inre to installing an AOD.
Yes after doing a little looking around on the interweb, I agree NumberD.
There is a ton of info of persons going from a 3 spd to a T5. I really have no preference manual or automatic, just needing to keep the RPMs down with the extra gears.
If you want a manual, the Mazda and ZF boxes also came in the right flavor for the 240 bell pattern. They require a hydraulic clutch. Both have lower first gears (ZF really low) and lower OD gears than the T5.
Both are integral bell, while the T5 will need an adapter or machine work to shorten the input to fit your bell.
Thanks Manfred, I have a 2wd. I did talk to Bruce Couture at Moderndriveline, so I am going to put a T5 with forward shifter in it. With the T5 there will be less mods to have to do.
