AOD Question
I have a 65 F100 with a 300 in it and would like to put the AOD trans behind it and get rid of the granny 4 speed I'm using now. I've read most of the other posts about this swap and everyone seems to be going to at least a 2 barrel carb to do this. My question is, can i do this using the stock 1 barrel? (not the 1100 but the carter YF) I do know ford put carbs on the 300's up into the mid 80's but did those engines use the overdrive trans or just manuals? I figure if the emission carbs had the tv cable attaching point it would be a simple matter of swapping the throttle shaft into an earlier carb. Any insight about this would be greatly appreciated.

When I researched this question, I went to a good transmission shop.
I found some interesting things about that AOD Transmission.
They happend to have one out on the bench, all apart, and he showed me a weak spot in the center of the Transmission.
It looked like a "no abuse" policy would be in order there.
What scared me was a warning:
There's a Cable from the Throttle to the Transmission.
That has to be absolutly correct or you'll do some serious damage to the Transmission immediatly on power up of the engine.
The last concern I had was the Flex plate and Torque converter to match a 300 to an AOD.
I never have seen one. I knew the 300 was connected to a C-4 and even the C-6, but who knows where to look and which parts will interchange?
Througout the years, I've often wondered why Ford didn't make a 300/AOD combination in the F-100 or even the F-150?

Ford made a 300/AOD combo but only till the E4OD replaced it.
Though 5.0 EFI's still had the AOD available as a lower cost Overdrive option.
The flexplate bares one difference from the C-6 flexplate, the depth for the Torque converter mounting is different.
Otherwise it bolts up.
There is a company on the net called www.bulkpart.com
They have AOD/300 flexplates for uber cheap, prolly cause demand is very low being a rare combo.
P/N F224AC $17.16
I paid $50+ locally.

The TV cable is the one thing that gives the AOD a bad rap in trucks, It's adjustments are critical. But not out of the realm of the home mechanic. And as for the internals, just stuff in the internal gears and clutch packs out of a AOD-E. That's what I'm thinking about doing, it's the same case.
I just need to get together the rest of the stuff for the swap. I am going to a AOD from a Mazda 5 speed in my 93.
