225 is the tread width in millimeters.
75 is the ratio of sidewall to tread width. That means the sidewall is 75% of the tread width 225*.75 = 168.75mm
16 refers to the rim size in inches
Putting sidewall (x2) and rim size together, thats about a 29.3" tall tire. (after converting from metric to inches)
235/85-16 would equate to about 31.7" tall, about 2.5 inches taller, and 10mm (.39 inch) wider.
a 225/75 is going to be alot shorter than the 235/85. Around a 28 or 29 inch tire. The 235/85 is around 31/32. The 225/75 is a common trailer tire size.
If you are currently running 235/85R16's with a 5 speed, your cruising RPM at 65 MPH should be around 2260. With the shorter tires, your RPM's will now be about 2440 at the same speed.
Also keep in mind that your speedo is going to be off now too. These aren't the worst things in the world, just something to keep in mind. If for some reason you have higher gears, say 3.55's, you may really like having the shorter tires.
If it seems like you are getting better MPG with the new tires, you may be... however, remember that your speedo and ODO will be running 8% fast.
It will make the truck look abit goofy on top of making you run at higher RPM's for the same speed, however if you're getting these tires for next to nothing, who cares, run them if you're in need of tires.
that's what im running on my dually with 3.55 gearing.here's why:
LT 225/75/R16 (29.3X8.9)
w/Speedometer Recalibrated to 1065 conversion constant Lowered Truck: 1.2" (primary objective for easier loading bed)
Effective Gear Ratio Change: 3.84:1 (secondary objective for better hauling performance)
they don't look too bad.definitely not your monster truck tire though.
you'll like 'em.they help with performance.
i contemplated stock drw size.the 215's.would have been around 3.73's with the 3.55's but i really had to set her down best i could cus this stuff doesn't just load itself.
the fuel economy would have been better with the slightly skinnier 215 and a little taller for keeping gearing up a tad,but my back said i should go as low as i can.there's always a compromise.pro's and cons with everything.
if i had the 4.10 ring and pinion, then i would had stuck with 215's.even though i do drive pretty slow.you'd have to press the skinny going downhill,if you gear 'em down too low.
^
besides lifting hurts economy, this is why i can't swap in a d60.i can't afford the lift in the rear to match the extra front height.already wish the truck sat 6" to a foot lower in the rear when loading and i'm over 6'.
thankfully i finally recently got a dump trailer for the larger stuff, but still always will be tossing stuff up into the dump bed of course as well.towing a trailer when you know your load will fit in the bed is cheaper on fuel to leave the trailer home.compromises.so many compromises.
