Auto locks not working

Auto locks not working
My neighbors 4wd is not working automatically and he is freaking out. Here are the highlights:
- Hubs will spin and lock manually
- Tcase engages fine and truck has 4wd if manually locked out
- When heater is in feet and 4wd is activated it DOES NOT start blowing heat from the defroster
These are the areas I know to look for, but I am lost after that. It seems the problem is not a vacuum leak since the heater works fine in 4wd. Where do I look next.

I ditched the ESOF system on my truck. Can I just take mine off?
Is there are good reason I should fully abandon my ESOF system? ie capping the lines and all that stuff. I just put my Warns on and enjoyed my 4wd.
