I tried searching around the forum but really couldn't find thread that matched what I'm experiencing.
First off my truck is a 06' F-350 SRW with a 6.0L.
No my problem... basically what I having issues with is my 4wd either not engaging or staying engaged. Here what's happening... When driving around in all the fresh snow in Northern Michigan over the past few days my 4wd seems to be going in and out of 4wd. For instance, 4wd will be engaged (and working) while driving, but then when I pull up to a stop light and sit for a minute or so I'll go to pull away and notice only my rear wheels are spinning. After this happens the front wheel will sometime re-engage, but not for a few hundred feet or so. And when they do re-engage it's pretty loud with chunking noises.
The 4x4 light in the dash cluster never turns off when all of this is happening. And from what I can tell nothing else seems to be wrong with the electric shift system.
What could the problem be... Vacuum issues? Bad hubs? Something else?
Most likely is a vacuum leak somewhere in one of the hubs. Does your heater default to defrost when the 4WD stops working? If it does then it is losing vacuum. I have been having the same problem but haven't found the source of the leak, so I just manually locked the hubs.
Well I tries looking for any loose vacuum lines and could see anything obvious. Also tries the heater defrost test and system doesn't change to the defroster when switching to 4H.
So for now I'm just running with the hubs in "lock" until I get home later this week.
