Hi All! I have been browsing this site for a a year or so now, but never registered and participated. I just bought my first diesel after both a 97 F150 4.6 4x4 and a 99 F150 5.4 4x4. Both great trucks and served my purpose very well. But, I found what I felt to be a fair deal on a 2003 Excursion Eddie Bauer 4x4 6.0L Diesel with 9300 miles on it. I am flying later tonight to go pick it up.
I have read the debate over MPG, reliability, and the like of other users and thought this might be a good opportunity to give some real world data for the forum. I pick up my Ex in Rhode Island and will drive it to Northern Virginia where I will visit family and do city driving. I then will head out half way across country to North Dakota to pick up a friend. We both then will drive through Canada and back to Alaska. So, my trip will have many variables-weather, flat, mountainous, city, highway, etc...
This is a vacation for me. I am taking two weeks to camp, hike, and fish with my buddy. No hotels here. We are both excited to see places we have never been. Although I have driven the Alaska Highway before, I have never been in Saskatchewan or Alberta provinces. Anywhere you Canandian Ford guys recommend seeing or stopping?
Really looking forward to this trip and becoming a more active participant here. If you guys can think of anything else I can track while traveling let me know what and the method and I'll do it. By the way, I will calculate all by hand and post when I am back. I will try to stop and post updates along the way. Look forward to chatting with you all
It sounds to me that you have the perfect vacation planned. No real time limits, no places' that you have to be, nothing planned but camping, fishing and site seeing. I'm jealous. Hope that you have fun and no problems. If you read through the site there is mentioned somthing about a sensor that can be easily replaced. That would be the only thing that I might want to take extra. also a couple 5 gal cans of deisel fuel strapped on someplace.
Have fun. Oh and by the way welcome to the site. There are some real knowledgeable folks here.
Wig Wag is what the flags are called to represent my Branch (Signal Corps) in the Army. The symbol consists of two crossed flags, one red with white center, the other white with red center. There is also a torch that runs between the flags. They were used for signaling during the Civil War and up until 1912. This was invented by Albert J. Myer in 1854. It proved to be effective, especially since telegraph lines could be easily cut. Plus, telegraph did not extend to the front lines of combat. It was also used out west to notify forts when there was Indian activity in the area.
Depending on the illumination and background, a soldier would take a flag to contrast with the horizon to send messages in a code not to unlike morse code. The torches obviously were for night.
Anyway, to make a long story short, since it is what I do for a living, it seemed only appropriate to use it as my screen name.
Welcome, WigWag! You will really like the PSD! I did read today in "Truck Trends" mag. that Ford has decided that there is a "bad" pressure sensor (I think) in "some" 6.0 PSDs, causing several "drivability" problems. There is a "recall", I'm pretty sure. You might want to check it out! On the "trip", I hope you really get to enjoy it, especially with an "EB EXCURSION"!
Thanks guys! Just got back a day or so ago and love the 6.0L. It is great. 5500 miles or so in two weeks and never missed a beat. I am calculating the actual fuel mileage now and will post it soon. I have to covert liters to gallons. Forgot my calculator on the trip and wanted to relax while traveling, not do math. I will list the computer average and what I compute. Look forward to chatting!!!
Good luck man, you got a score, Excursions are the king of SuV's especially if it's a diesel. The Excursions are grat, my Uncle owned a 2002 Excursion. It had 325 hp and 425lbs/ft@3,250 rpm's vs. the Chevy Suburban Ls's 360lbs/ft@4,000rpm's and the Excurions GVRW (lbs) is 8,900! Well have fun with that Power Stroke Diesel!
