Blown transfer case

So this is something I never would have expected to have happen, I was driving yesterday about 45 miles into my run I heard a very loud pop and experienced an incredible vibration until I finally stopped. After a quick look it was evident the transfer **** itself. It has a decent crack along the bottom and dumped all of it's fluid out the bottom, my question is this. Would having the left front hub locked cause this scenario, because mine was locked.

Either way, does anyone know how hard it would be to convert a zf5 transfer case to work on my zf6? Or am I going to have to settle for spending $1700 for a reman. I'm drawing blanks when calling the salvage yards, apparently a zf6 with a transfer case isn't that common.

Try looking at a thread called "gold mine!". It's a superduty graveyard, the may have something for you, and they ship.

Don't know if the cases are interchangeable or not. Someone else may.

To answer your question "NO".

I leave my hubs locked all winter and one winter found that I had been driving with only one hub locked.

Unless your front differential is a "locked" style you should have plenty of differential action to compensate for either hub being locked.

good luck on your replacement. I have never heard of this happening before.

i have seen two do it and think there was someone else here that had it happen as well. No known reason for it other the case cracks and blows apart..
