Hello, I have a 90 Eddie Bauer 5.8L and have a huge problem.
Lately after driving for under a minute at 35mph I heard and felt a huge jolt. Immediately afterwards I heard what sounded like a chain spinning. Then evrything went back to normal. Next day it hapenned again. I changed the transfer case fluid as well as the transmission fluid and filter and it still happenned. So i put it in 4wd and it drove fine. Could it be a problem with my transfer case? If so how difficult would it be for me to fix it myself? I dont know what a shop would charge but it probably would be a bit too much for my military paycheck to handle. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
first, check the linkage on the transfer case shifter.
then , do you remember if any plastic came out in fluid during change?
these cases have some nylon parts inside that can wear, causing the problem you describe.
Thanks for the info. I did a lot of checking and reading up on the transfer case as well as the auto locking hubs. After not finding anything in the fluid I was stumped. Took it to a shop and they informed me the autohubs were bad. Got them replaced with Warn manual locking hubs, cost 250 bucks for parts and labor. I guess that's a lot better than buying or rebuilding the transfer case. Thanks for the reply.
