Welcome to the club! I hope everything works out with the truck. I paid $2700 out the door for mine a few years ago but it has no rust or major body damage. Couple of dings and dents but that's about it.
I can almost guarantee you that they did not put a claim into their insurance because the deductible would have been more than the cost of the repair. No since in repairing it at their expense when they can drop the price a little and make it your problem. The reason you see dealers with cars sitting on their lot for months at a time is because they have the price set too high. All dealers think that they are selling mint condition cars and go off that KBB value.
I paid $850 for my Mercedes and the guy was asking $1200. It was not hard to negotiate with the seller once I pointed out what the car needed. He knew it was a project car, anyway. I have spent probably 4x what I paid for the car in repairs and restoration but you can clearly see a difference, which makes it worth it.
