Excursion Questions/New To site

Just wanted to say wow what an awesome site. cannot believe how much I have learned. You guys are great at responding to questions etc. I know my post may be a bit redundant and if need be point me into existing threads if you desire. I know just enough to get me in trouble so please help.

this is my second ford excursion and all i can say is wow! 1st excursion was a 2000 5.4L black XLT.

current excrusion. 2000 Green two tone. 6.8L Limited edition. 4x4. Amazing truck.

1. bought truck noticed it would not shift unless i took foot off gas at about 3500 RPM. had injuectors cleaned, MAF sensor replaced, and fuel fiter replaced. after replacing MAF it does shift a little better. getting a code saying truck is "running to lean". Mechanic says needs a new ECU. Can ECU's be upgraded from stock? can someone fill me in on how this works? and can I upgrade myself?

2. The steering wheel is very worn, the leather is fading and time for a replacement. I am obsessed with the 05 excursions. Am i able to put an 05 excursion wheel (or any year with audio, cruise, and temp controls) on my 2000 excursion? also is the temp/climate control interchangeable with the new one? I would like to change steering wheel, stereo and climate control, so i can have full functionality on the wheel. thoughts?

3. Grill I also would like to upgrade to the 05 grill, how hard is this? any good options?

thanks so much guys tried to search for these specific terms in the forums and most were just too vague.

Marc

Welcome to FTE.

Here is one on a steering wheel swap, it's in Navigator forum but appears to be on an EX, might give it a read and check for sure.

Marc,

Not sure if this will help or if you have already done this...

But after cleaning or replacing the MAF sensor...if the battery has not been disconnected...do it.

Disconnect the battery, turn on the headlights to drain any stored charges, reconnect battery...doing this resets the computer and forces it to "learn" the new sensor readings and adjust accordingly.

I'd try that first if you haven't already after MAF replacement and see if that helps at all.

Good luck and WELCOME to FTE!

Thanks

thanks guys I appreciate it.

Speed that's exactly what i was looking for! Now that I have been poking around this site saw a guy do a sick conversion new fenders, new panels, new grill, basically updated the front end to an 08 look.

Sammie/: Thanks for the thoughts on the steering wheel may have to go that route. however does anyone happen to know if I can just swap with newer excursion parts, Steering wheel, AC control and stereo? anybody kow if these components are "hot swappable"?

Hemi I will give that a try, thanks i'll keep you posted

On the grille if you want to go with a complete front end with 05-07 grille, bumper and lights you just need to replace the header panel which is what your grille and headlights bolt to. Alot of people modify the existing header panel with a dremel tool or something similar. The newer model headlights are alot deeper so they wont fit into the shallow recesses so the panel is cut out to accommodate them. You can get a header panel for around 75 bucks, 150 for headlights, grilles ive seen for around 100 or so. If your lucky like me you can get the bumper setup at the salvage yard cheap, I had 300 in just my bumper which was complete with brackets and fogs. I had to get everything cause it wife was in an accident. Big difference in front end.

HTC Man your set up is SIIIICK! Money set up!

Hemi: I disconnected the battery and left the lights on. I can see the system did reset because the light went out, however the symptoms have not changed. Shifting seems to be pretty close to accurate, however during a hillclimb, or under load, It will rev to about 3k and then not shift, but it will also act like it's either flooding itself or not getting enough fuel. under 3k runs perfect, now I know I should be able to hit about 5,500 Rs before having it either limit itself or shift.

Ideas/thoughts? Mechanic says that ECU is faulty and only reading at 75% of what it should be and that's why i am hanging up but idk how much I trust these mechanics or any. they also say its about 1000 dollar fix. Yikes!

this was the description I found from a guy having a similar problem

I have a 2000 Ex with 136,000 on it. It has a V10, and is 4X2. At highway
speeds, moderate to heavy throttle, or any other time, it will suddenly lose
power. I have to pull over on busy interstates. If I shut it off and
restart it:

Thanks for the props. I think what makes mine stand out is I didn't paint the upper bumper pad tan like it should have been. Also the Harley edition lights compliment the black and chrome theme IMO. Was originally gonna go with the tan upper pad and regular lights but thought the front end would come off as too "bright" with the tan. So glad I went with black. If I had went with a painted black grille I'd have went with tan on bumper.

Marc,

Sorry it didn't work out...I figured it was a cheap and easy step to try...replacement or cleaning of the MAF sensor just needs that last step of battery disconnect to help reset things...

Good luck and keep everyone up to date on what you find...the ECU may be an expensive "try"...ask your mechanic if he will refund you if it doesn't fix it...I doubt he will...but let's see how committed he is to his "fix"...

Joe.
