So the aluminum ones have better cooling than the brass/copper radiators?
Not necessarily. The tubes in the aluminum are wider than copper so the theory is that aluminum dissipates heat faster, plus I think the wider tubes in the aluminum ones create a difference that a 2 row aluminum is as good as a 3 row copper and so forth so there is quite a bit of money saving that could be there. Bang for buck is where the aluminum radiators (depending on brand) can be better than copper which is expensive. The huge 4 row copper radiators are about the best you can get for these trucks, but are over $450 I believe. A cheaper 3 row aluminum can be had for under $300. You are going to hear the argument for both types and which is better.
I decided on a replacement rad; first though I want to thank everyone for contributing your thoughts and suggestions as it really was appreciated. I'm going to order the Super Cooler rad from JBG (#20604), I still like cooper rads and that one should do the job.
I don't think you'll have a problem with that radiator. I'm also assuming you have a front flange mount core support as there were some rear flange mount in 77. At least a 77 parts truck had a rear flange mount core support that I used and it sucks because most aftermarket radiators are front flange mount.

Oh sure, scare the crap out of me! Since the truck is in storage I had to search through pics to make sure which it was, front flange...whew
Now I am worried about which "flange" type I have. My current rad has a flange kinda in the middle. I can see two flanges with holes on the outter edges, fan shroud is mounted on one of them. Then between the 2 there is the bracket that mounts the rad to the header. Which flange type is this? see red arrow...
That core support is made for a rear flange mount radiator. This is what a core support looks like for a front flange mount. It doesn't have the side mount supports so the radiator mounts to the front of the support.
