Alternator Wiring Trouble
I've got a 1985 F150 with the inline six 300.
Recently I've been having some electrical issues. With the engine running, if I use a turn signal, or my high beams, or use any accessory whatsoever, my radio shuts off and then turns back on. My headlights and dashlights seem to be dimmer all the time also. Now today my truck won't start. I tested the battery and it still has 12.4 V. I replaced both the alternator and the battery a year ago. I know the PO messed with the charging system wiring so I took a look and there is a melted wire going from the alternator to the starter solenoid, but the fusible link appears to be intact and the melted wire tested positive for continuity. I am hoping that is the problem because like most people, auto electrical systems really frustrate me. The connection is labeled "B" on the alternator, and it is a black and orange wire. The wire splits and goes to the starter, volt regulator and I believe the choke. There appears to be another fusible link where the wire splits labeled "N", and unfortunately the PO spliced the lead to the choke very close to that link. I'd love to find the whole alternator wiring setup and replace it as a whole, as it looks like the PO messed with it a fair amount.
Does anyone know where I can find that wiring? And what is fusible link N and can I buy an aftermarket replacement in the event I can't find the alternator wiring as a whole. Also I do not have a wire running to the "Ground" post of the alternator, as there was not one when I got the truck. Any thoughts on that?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I'm trying to sort this wiring mess out today and have my truck back on the road asap since it is my daily driver. I know there is a a lot to read here, and if I can give any further information please let me know.
You guys are the best,
Matt
I have access to the wiring for either style and hopefully can scan and post it for you.
